Where are the Dolls?

April 18, 2023

Where are the dolls, Tamdoll?

UPDATE 3/23/2024: Check out the newest page added to this website - Tamdoll's Dolls

I started this blog to share my dollmaking, but over the years I shared more and more of other crafts, and somehow the dolls took a back-burner on this forum. (Go ahead, check out this doozy from 2006.)

Looking back, when it came to dolls I was either working on my original pattern making, or sewing other folks' designs... but for reasons that I can't recall now - I didn't post much about them here. It's time to fix this.

Once upon a time, I did have another site featuring my dolls, but the internet swallowed up that host—snapshots can be seen on the Internet Archive. So, the next series of posts will focus on sharing some of my doll making adventures.

Why now? Well, it has been on my mind lately, but recently spurring me into real action is sadly, the failing health of a magical artist who I have admired since I was a teenager.

Sorted through my attic and found some dolls I'd almost forgotten about!

Knitting this Week

March 16, 2012

Tamdoll's Chloë

Chloë from Spud and Chloe at the Farm (Knit & Read Book).  She was fun to make.  Why 2 pictures?  I couldn’t decide which background I liked better.

I have to make an effort to watch my stitching – you can tell at the bodice that my tension changed when I moved from knitting-in-the-round to back & forth.  Usually I’d say “I did it that way on purpose” and I think I can get away with it in this case as a dress “design element”.  But… I just want to get things right this year and this is something I’m going to work on!

Right now I have a new handbag in the washing machine being felted, and half-way through I can already tell it’s going to be a good one.  But I forgot to take a “before” photo!  Also been experimenting with some domino knitting – and I really, really like it!  Much better than entrelac.  Photos of those projects in a few days.

What are you working on?

More Zombie Love

June 7, 2011
Tamdoll Zombie DollsLiked Sunday’s zombies?  These two are only a few inches tall and kind of gory.  They’re patterns from the book: Zombie Felties: How to Raise 16 Gruesome Felt Creatures from the Undead.   I improvised just a little bit, using felt and beads that I had in the house and combining elements from some of the patterns in the book to make this unique couple.  I’ve already heard that the bride and groom love it and are going to put them in a frame somewhere in their house – I’m so glad.  I still think it’s creepy.

Zombie Lite

June 5, 2011

This weekend I’ll be celebrating at a wedding with a very special couple.  About a year ago they asked if I could make a wedding topper for them…. a zombie wedding topper…

I couldn’t make it too gross, or have them decayed or baring teeth, so I’m calling this “zombie lite”:

Tamdoll Zombie Wedding Topper

So, I’ve been crafting, just couldn’t show this until the wedding came around.  A tutorial may be in the works for this one, depending on whether anyone is interested or not.

And yes, that’s his arm she’s holding (by request).

Love Bots Reveal for Valentine’s Day

January 17, 2011

Tamdoll's Mini Love-Bots for Valentine's Day

I received a couple of guesses in my last post’s comments, and on Facebook… so here’s a preview of what the little cubes are becoming!  Mini Love-Bots for Valentine’s Day.  Each one will be unique – so far I have just the 8 blocks assembled.

I truly have such a hard time sitting still to work on these, but with some bad weather coming tomorrow, maybe I can get them completed.  They’ll be available locally and maybe one or two will show up in my Etsy shop, also.  (Let me know if you have a preference.)  The ’bot above is made with a sweater that had been felted and repurposed into this cutie.Tamdoll's Workspace

One of my other current projects is a bag that I’ve been crocheting.  It still needs a handle, lining and assembly – but since it’s a summery colored yarn, there’s no rush:

I got the bag of yarn as a “1lb. remnant”  - maybe when I’m done with this one I can make a second – it was certainly easy enough.  I’ll check my yarn quantity by weighing it to see if I have 1/2lb. or more leftover when I’m finished.  Anyone else out there weigh their yarn? Tamdoll's Workspace

Thanks for your support and votes in the champagne cork challenge!  I didn’t win, but I was happy with the results, and found another great blog to follow because of it.

I hope this is the beginning of a very creative week.  What are you going to do?

Tool Tuesday - Xuron Kevlar Cutters vs. Precision Scissors

May 4, 2010
Once upon a time, I was working on a doll armature and in usual Tamdoll fashion, grabbed whatever was nearby to cut the wire.  I had an old cutter, squeezed too hard and wrenched something in my palm…. a minor procedure at the doctor's office and a few weeks later I was relieved that no permanent damage had been done – and learned a lesson - good quality tools are important!  Since then I’ve been more conscientious about what I use for each application – in my crafting I use everything from heavy-duty wire, to fishing line, to cotton threads and fine jewelry wire.  Here, Stuart is going to focus on some precision cutting tools.

Tool Tuesday - Xuron Kevlar Cutters vs. Precision Scissors
Xuron produces a wide range of pliers and cutters that quite popular amongst crafters. I wouldn't call myself a crafter, but as mentioned elsewhere, I often use Xuron tools for a number of my hobbies and for precision work.
Xuron offers such a wide range of tools that it can sometimes be difficult to choose the right tool for the task. At one point, I needed a pair of precision scissors to cut tough nylon parachute cord (paracord). I found that Xuron offered two excellent options - their 440 high precision scissors, and 9180 Kevlar fiber cutters.
Xuron
The 440 high precision cutters are cheaper, shorter, and are capable of more precise cuts. Xuron's Kevlar cutters, on the other hand, are designed to cleanly cut through stronger material, and are available with either plain-edge blades, or with one plain-edge and one serrated blade. Ultimately, I opted for the serrated 9180 Kevlar cutter for its greater strength and non-slip capabilities. A few hundred cuts later, the tool is still performing as well as ever, and has never let me down.
Ideally, one could use Kevlar cutters for heavier duty cutting, and the 440 high precision shears for more delicate work.  For crafting, Xuron tools are used for soft wire work, beading, jewelry making, and floral arrangements, to name a few.  I also use it to trim thread and cord flush up to their knots. With regular scissors I cannot get that close due to their size.   The Xuron scissors are also good for "high strength beading and fishing line".
These Xuron scissors and shears are orders of magnitude better than the imported no-name ones you'll find at department stores and certain craft shops. Aside for their great quality, they're affordable priced, AND made in the USA! The two models mentioned in this post can be found via crafting suppliers, industrial tool suppliers, and on Amazon (affiliate links):
Do you use precision scissors or pliers? If so, tell us about them! I'll talk a bit more about precision shears and pliers in a few weeks, but before then I'd like to hear from all of you!
Xuron also has a very active and friendly rep on twitter, who can answer any questions and has been known to give away tools at random times. http://twitter.com/Xuron

Birds in Progress

January 19, 2010
I want to throw glitter paint all over these.  The design I had tried a few weeks ago…. yeah.. those didn't turn out so well.

Something else to check out -
Go Green with EtsyChai  - I’m participating here, and there is a month-long series of articles, some sales and promotions – an upcoming one will discuss how different artists try to be environmentally friendly in their homes and work.  You may be able to tell that I work with upcycled fabrics sometimes ( a skirt, sweater and upholstery fabric remnants in the above birds).  I’m also on my local Solid Waste Commission to promote recycling in our town and schools – I think it’s pretty important, and it’s just part of life to reuse and not throw things away whenever possible.

Inspiration, Finally!

December 20, 2009
unfinished tweets

I’ve been wanting to make birds, ever since April.  I still have these parts lying around – unfinished!  Why can’t I finish things?  (Really a discussion for another time …)

So, I’m sitting here, thinking about a new bird design, and I look around…. I’ve been looking at that green bird on a nearby shelf for years.  I have a few more around the house, too – all this quirky, long-beaked style.  Hello?!  So, I drew a picture and I think I’m on my way.

new design

Hopefully to having a productive afternoon!  (Ignoring the baking, mittens-in-progress, the scarf that’s only 1/8 of the way done, and the two bags I wanted to sew this week…)

What inspires you? I’d love to hear about it.

I’m going to answer my own question here before I even post.  (Because I don’t plan these blog posts, they just develop as I write them.)  I don’t think it’s the bird that inspired me.  I think it’s the huge list of other things I need to do that makes me procrastinate with new creative ideas!
