Wild Chickens

September 12, 2019
A week doesn't go by without me seeing someone's chickens roaming around the neighborhoods in my town. I couldn't resist stopping to take a photo of this bunch posing down the street from my house, and then of course - turning it into an art project.

First I had some fun with photo editing apps to add filters and create variations, and posted some in my society6 shop, making them available as mini prints.

Next, I thought they would look cute on wooden blocks, posted a video of that on Instagram.

How to:

  1. Print a color copy of the image on a laser printer (it won't work with inkjet copies). Make sure to reverse the image when printing to ensure it comes out facing the right direction after the next step.
  2. Apply a thin layer of Liquitex Gloss Gel to a wooden block and place the image face down onto the wet medium, smooth it out, and leave it to dry overnight.
  3. The next day, use some water to wet the back of the image and rub off the paper, leaving a transfer of the photo on the wooden block.

It wasn't a difficult project, and I'll be looking for some wooden boxes to repeat this on since I love the chicken images.

It's not my first bird/chicken project either ...

Is there a motif or symbol you find yourself returning to again and again in your creativity?
