EtsyBloggers Carnival – Romance and Winter

February 7, 2011

This week’s EtsyBloggers topic is hosted by Linda (pruitthandcrafts):
1) Next week is Valentines! We have already had a "love" theme, so tell us about your favorite "romantic" book or movie and what you like about it.
2) We are also in the middle of winter! Write something about you/your family's winter experiences. Let's see if you can make the "cold" come thru your writing!

Maybe I’ll have a little of both 1) & 2) in this post.  For #1:

Tamdoll's Romance Pick - Music from Another Room

Music From Another Room is a really charming movie, and it was the first one that came to mind when I read this topic.  If I had to chose a genre of film that would never be on the top of my viewing list, it would be romance,  but I was drawn to it the first time because I saw Jude Law’s name on it. Yes, I’ve seen it more than once!

There are subplots that really make the story and family endearing, making me cry and laugh all in the same movie.  Honestly, the sister Nina’s storyline is what I love the most… I can’t say much about it so I don’t give anything away!  If you’ve seen it, or get to watch it, please let me know what you think!

As for #2: Tamdoll's backyard

It’s cold here in NH... For weeks I think the average has been 25°F (my unscientific, slightly-fact based, frozen-toed opinion).  Here’s a shot into my backyard, it’s been snowing each week and accumulating steadily.  Every week the kids have had a delay or school closure because of road conditions.  And, it’s cold enough that it just piles up and doesn’t melt – I’m predicting mid-April this year till the last bit of snow disappears!

Without wool socks, wool scarves, wool gloves, layers of snow pants, boots and hats, I don’t think I’d enjoy it here – but bundled up, it’s not so bad!

  1. Hey there!

Okay, for #1: Casablanca still gets me. And Ingrid Bergman is simply stunning in this movie. I also love Jerry McGuire, a Tom Cruise movie that will always make me cry and leave me feeling optimistic about love and the kindness of people. Call me a softy, but it does!
For books: I love the English Patient by Michael Ondaatje. Yeah, the movie was good, too. But the book is so lyrical.

#2: my thoughts on winter: some things are lost in the snow in both the literal and metaphysical sense. A shovel, a broom, my patience, the kids' optimism. Yesterday the sun broke through the morning clouds after a bout of freezing rain, and melted some of the piled up white stuff that has overtaken the landscape. I saw evidence of our lost artifacts and had a moment of peace.

Thanks for this post, Tammy. And hope we get to spring sooner than later!

  3. CraftyRichela - would you believe I never saw Casablanca? It's one of those films that are on my "to see" list along with a bunch of classic novels I've never read. I LOVED the English Patient movie and read only parts of the book afterward. It's hard for me to read a book after I've seen a film.

  4. Tammy,
Oh, read the book! I promise that it's worth it. I know that you know who the English Patient is already, but...anyway, I'm not a huge book reader, but that one sticks in my head. I completely agree about not being able to read the book after seeing the movie, too. And it's also truly difficult to read the book and then watch the movie aferwards. Most of the time it's a horrible disappointment.
You've really never seen Casablanca? That's okay. There's a few classic movies out there I have never seen. I know I'm still too young for a bucket list, but they are on it! So I'm sure you'll get around to it.

  5. I'll have to check out that movie. It has very good actors.
Winter's about the same here, but not quite as much snow.

  7. Looks like I'll have to watch this movie on a cold day like the one in your photo. Somehow they seem to go hand-in-hand.
